Carbon Angel used the most recent and available data it could find to understand and determine what an individual’s carbon footprint is based on a yearly impact. We have obtained this information (2003-2007) from statistics from official government sites and research groups & institutions. In the event we had conflicting figures from one source or another we used the average of the sum total or in some cases the lower figure. This carbon calculator is a representation of your carbon impact on the planet by burning fossil fuels. The total CO2 figure based on your input is the best analysis applied to any single individual and/or household available, however, the figures it calculates are approximate.

An example would be that the “auto” miles driven per year have been calculated at 12,883 miles driven per year (three sources) and a national average of 23 miles per gallon (2 sources). With this approach it is reasonable to understand the calculator is accurate however your driving habits may be different. The type car you drive doesn’t really matter in this approach. Should you drive an SUV then you will know that your miles per gallon will be much less and the opposite your miles per gallon for a hybrid will be much more. Even with this information, you may actually drive more or less miles per year. You can adjust the calculator accordingly to come with an approximate value based on your own knowledge of your driving habits. This approach is respectively the same for household, electricity use, natural gas and heating oil and airplane travel At Carbon Angel we believe that relying of some form of measurement and approximation and acting to strike and reduce your carbon footprint is better than doing nothing. Each of us understands that our energy use is not zero and we are playing a part in CO2 emissions.
